Funding the future of independent media.
A single, shared fund so philanthropists and the public can support the whole independent media ecosystem, not just whichever organisation shouts loudest for a grant.
Fundraising shouldn't be the job.
Independent media does extraordinary work. But fundraising is increasingly fragmented, competitive and time-consuming.
A simpler way to give.
The Media Freedom Fund is being created by the Independent Media Trust to provide a simpler way for philanthropists and the public to support the whole independent media ecosystem — not just individual organisations.
Instead of forcing donors to choose winners and losers, the Fund acts as an independent steward, ensuring support reaches the sector fairly and transparently.
Divided equally, three ways.
Funding will be divided equally between three priorities.
Core funding
Core funding for regulated independent publishers.
Shared infrastructure
Shared infrastructure that reduces costs and strengthens the whole sector.
Innovation projects
Innovation projects chosen democratically by donors, with one vote per donation, regardless of how much someone gives.
Spend less time competing for funding, and more time producing great journalism.
